Sharon’s mercy mission to India, January 2020

Sharon is an inspiration to us again!  She travelled to India in January as part of the ‘Healing Little Hearts’ charity along with other doctors and nurses from the hospital. They performed life-saving heart surgery on children there, who without the surgery would not have survived.

She carried with her bags containing items to aid the childrens’ recovery, and Frodsham WI supported the scheme by decorating the bags. Each bag contained a blanket, toys, crayons and colouring books, a water cup and medication to help the child’s family nurse them once the team had departed.

Sharon said : ‘these families have nothing. They are desperate. We give them a blanket and cup because there is no provision for the families in the hospital, so they have to sleep outside in the grounds while their child is recovering. We also need to provide the medicine and some training to support their child after they return home to their village. The children are thrilled to receive the toys and crayons because they have so little in their lives.’  WI members decorated the bags with a motif of a broken heart, which had been sewn back together with buttons to mend it. The bags also had a wooden heart attached for the child’s name.  Frodsham WI also raised £466 for Sharon to buy the items needed for the bags.

Sharon and the other doctors and nurses use their holiday leave allocation to go on the trip.

Well done to you all!

Frodsham WI celebrating 70 years

Frodsham WI celebrating 70 years

Frodsham WI is delighted to announce in 2018 we are celebrating our 70th Birthday, formerly known as Five Crosses WI which was founded in 1948. In 2007 we became Frodsham WI.

It has been a successful beginning to their 70th Birthday year with members enjoying a visit from guest speaker and award winning hairdresser Andrew Collinge who gave a very engaging talk about his hairdressing heritage together with highlights of a fascinating career.

Frodsham WI meets on the first Thursday of the month at the Frodsham Community Centre on Fluin Lane, where a special meeting was held in March to mark this milestone birthday. Members enjoyed a three course dinner, live music by Ashton Folk, birthday cake and were given a branded celebratory tote bag to mark the occasion. Do look out for them in Frodsham and area!

Frodsham WI currently has 55 members and is a very active group with members ranging from 40 – 97 years of age. Members organize the Frodsham ‘Make it, Bake It, Grow it, Sew it’ event, support local events such as The picnic in the park and Frodsham Community Centre quizzes, together with projects such as the litter clean up. Many support requests for local assistance such as making child friendly blankets and sheets and knitted octopus toys for premature babies in support of one of our members Sharon Greenwood who works as a Sister on the Pediatric intensive care unit at Alder Hey.

Members also belong to the various groups including Book Club, Craft group, Sports Club and are launching a new Walking group. Trips & outings are planned throughout the year & the group annually supports and takes part at the WI events at the Cheshire Show.

Joint Presidents Jan Moran & Cath Stone say: “We are delighted to be celebrating Frodsham WI’s 70th Birthday. We have a very rich heritage and a wonderful and very active group of members who are passionate about our history and our future. The celebrations will continue throughout the year in various ways and we’re looking forward to the next 70 years.”

Call to action: We would like to get in touch with all our former members to invite them to a special Frodsham WI 70th Birthday Afternoon Tea on Saturday 7th July. To register interest please contact Cath Stone on 01928 735454

Frodsham WI’s Make it, Bake it, Grow it, Show it Show 2017

Frodsham WI once again enjoyed organizing this local event which took place on Saturday 9th September and has proved to be more popular this year than ever.

The community centre hosted the event and the room was filled with fresh produce, flower arrangements, cakes and bakes, Jams and breads, knits & jewellery, painting and photography as well as entries from local school children.

Judging this year’s Best in Show were Mike Garvey & Sue Sljivic, members of the Marshes Community Benefit Fund panel and we are delighted to say that Gill Hesketh won the prize for Best in Show with Harry the Hare and Isobel Heald won the overall junior prize with a most skillful Frodsham bee.

Says Vivien Shaw, Event Coordinator “This was a fantastic community event that everyone has enjoyed, it has shown many and varied talents from the Frodsham people.”

Thanks go to our supports Dandelion, Just Sew, Hales and Gleaves, sponsors CWaC and Marshes Community Benefit fund, those who took the time to enter & of course to all our volunteer helpers on the day.
